Top 5: Horror Anime

Horror is one of my favorite genres of anything, and seeing as it's Halloween, I'd like to share a few series that I feel are exceptional horror anime.
5. Deadman Wonderland
It's an anime where prisoners are forced to perform life-or-death stunts to amuse patrons that go to the 'theme park'. Do I have to say more? I do? Okay.

To be fair, the public doesn't know that they're watching people be horribly maimed or killed. They think it's an act for the 'show'. Ganta, the boy above, is wrongly imprisoned for killing his entire class, and vows to find the man who really committed the crime and prove his innocence. The girl, Shiro, is... eccentric, for lack of a better word. Of course, you do eventually find out why she is the way she is.
Not to mention DMWL has a kickass opening song.
The only reason Deadman Wonderland isn't higher on this list is because the anime ends very abruptly. To get the full experience, I highly suggest reading the manga too.
4. Hellsing
Vampires? Vampires with guns? Vampires with guns who hunt other vampires? Sign me up.

Alucard works for Sir Integra Hellsing get rid of vampires who are unruly. Along the way he meets 'Police Girl' Seras Victoria (and by 'meets', I mean 'he turns her into a vampire', effectively adding her to the 'main character' category). It's all very gory with a ton of action.
3. Bokurano
Two words. Mecha anime.

For many people, you've probably never heard of this anime at all. I don't blame you, it's hard to find. The only reason I know it is because my sister (who's about 4 years older than me) reccommended I watch it. Bokurano is easily categorized as 'science-fiction' but it's more like 'horror sci-fi'.
A group of middle schoolers unknowingly sign themselves up to fight giant robots in a robot called 'Zearth'. They end up fighting for the sake of the earth. Sounds like an everyday mecha anime. Let me emphasize this for you: middle schoolers. These are literal children, fighting and dying and you get to learn about their lives along the way (and trust me, some of them are horrifying).
It's a great watch, especially if you want something where things you wouldn't expect happen and there's a good amount of a shock factor. Fans of Evangelion would probably enjoy this anime. And to save you the effort, you can watch the series here: http://gogoanime.tv/bokurano-episode-1
2. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
Cute kids with murderous intent.

A staple of any horror anime list is Higurashi. It starts out very nicely, in fact you get super cute vibes from every character. And then it all goes to sh- sorry, heck. It becomes really scary and gorey and once again, like with Bokurano, this anime stars children. There's something about creepy murderous children that skeeves people out (and the Japanese enough to make multiple animes about it).
Higurashi is very long, too. It's seperated into 'Question Arcs' and 'Answer Arcs'. The whole first season is Question Arcs and all of the second season is Answers.
1. Another
"Who is the dead one?"

Another is the number one horror anime on my list for a reason. It's a mystery/horror where at least one character dies per episode. The characters you grow to love are brutally taken from you, often in horrific manners.
The story goes like this: In 1972, a student named Misaki died and her class was so devastated that they pretended for the rest of the year that she was still alive. At the end of the year, class 3-3 took a group photo and noticed a strange prescence in the photo. Now, in 1998, Koichi Sakakibara joins class 3-3 and meets Mei Misaki, a girl who is ignored by the class and treated as though she doesn't exist.
Turns out that there is a curse placed on class 3-3, where if they don't figure out who the extra person (who is deceased) is, the students and their families will die by the end of the year. Having a suspiscion that Mei is not the dead one, Koichi begins to investigate the mystery.
Another has a lot of twists and turns. I honestly didn't figure out who was 'the dead one' until it was revealed, and then upon re-watching the series it all made sense. It's a truly amazing horror anime and deserves the number one spot on my list.
Anime Gal, signing off!
